Welcome 2020 with a Vasilopita

Vasilopita – New Year Cake

Greece is full of traditions and this is what makes spending time in Greece so interesting. To mark the end of one year and the beginning of the next year every home will cut a “Vasilopita” a new year pie.

The sweet plain cake dusted with icing sugar and with a coin hidden inside are usually either bought at the bakery or made in the  home. This cake will be blessed with a cross by the head of the household and then cut into pieces.

  • First for God to bless the home.
  • Second piece for the father or head of the household.
  • Thirdly for the Mother of the home.
  • Then in descending order all the family members
  • The lucky person that finds the coin in their piece will have a great year and lots of luck will be cast upon them.

 Gourie – Good luck charm

These charms are hung in homes and shared around friends and family to bring luck into the home and to bless family members during the whole of the coming year.

These lucky charms are also given when you move to a new home or open a new business or have a  new babies, basically anytime you want to wish someone good luck in new ventures.

You can purchase these little charms at many gift and tourist shops in Plaka, Athens and all over Greece.

Wishing you all a wonderful 2020

Health – Wealth – Love

Safe Travels
