Just a 2 hour 30 min drive from Athens, Ancient Messini is one of the most important and amazing excavated cities of Greece.
The archaeological site is located in a beautiful natural environment overlooked by the pretty mountainside village of Mavromati (black eye). The whole site is surrounded by walls (about 9,5km length) which protected the rest of the city. This means that today we are truly able to appreciate the sheer scale and size of this ancient Greek city, and admire all the architectural designs.
The ancient city was built around 369 B.C , one of the most well-preserved site in Greece and the sheer size of the gymnasium area is breath taking.
If you are interested in visiting archeological sites Messini must be on your list, only 12 euros entrance fee which also includes the small museum in MavroMati.
Allow yourself at least 2 hours to enjoy this site and wear walking shoes you will clock up your steps on this walk.

Messini is already on a tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status but until things change if you visit the Peloponnese this site is surly worth a visit.
