My first trip to a Greek vineyard and I could not have selected a more beautiful experience. Whilst on a Ellas Porsche club drive we visited this charming area and we loved the sweet Mavro Daphne wine so much we ordered bottles to be served at our daughters wedding during the summer.

A perfect day trip from the capital, situated 2.5 hours from Athens along a new and very easy road.CHAIA CLAUSS, was founded in 1861 by the Bavarian Gustav Clauss who came to Patras Greece and was so impressed by its stunning scenery he bought a vineyard of just 15 acres and eventually built the wine-castle  and it is still preserved until today. Charmed by the breathtaking view of the landscape which the winery is situated it is thought to attract a great amount of tourists & local visitors annually. The tour around the vineyard and the wine cellars was extremely interesting, very informative and ended with a sample of the amazing wine.

We were amazed at the 19th century stone buildings and the huge wine barrels carved from oak, especially the one containing the century-old Mavrodaphne wine. Famous for his sweet red wine that Gustav Clauss first produced in 1873 was given the name “Mavrodaphne” in honour of Daphne, his Greek beloved with the beautiful black eyes (Mavro means black in Greek). For more information regarding their vast selection of Achaia Clauss wines.

Overall this makes for a perfect mini trip from Athens, just the right amount of driving and to find yourself in an area that resembles Tuscany with fabulous wine I can highly recommend it.

Safe Travels
